Juror’s Statement

“The human form in art has been represented since the earliest discoveries of artistic expression. Arguably the most enduring theme in art history- figurative art is ubiquitous across cultures and time. The study of anatomy combined with an increasing knowledge of perspective and pictorial space elevated figurative drawing and painting during the Renaissance. From Michelangelo to Lucien Freud, and from Tiepolo to Alice Neal; creatives are constantly finding new ways to explore what it means to be a figurative artist. While art discourse and aesthetics have changed and undulated a great deal over the last 500 years, for several, the study of the human form and figuration remains central and paramount to continuing artistic practice. The work exhibited will reflect a range of styles and mediums. As a juror, I am looking for work that demonstrates a commitment to figuration and an artistic voice.”
