THE LIVING CANVAS

AN EXHIBITION OF FIGURATIVE ART FROM LIFE DRAWING SESSIONS

JUROR’S STATEMENT:

The human figure is one of the most enduring themes in the visual arts, and is commonly the basis of portraiture, illustration, sculpture and other artistic applications. The theme of this exhibition is the representation of the human figure and portrait developed through observation during an active life drawing session.

Life drawing specifically has been a key element in the traditional training of artists in the Western world since the Renaissance. It is arguably the most difficult subject an artist commonly encounters due to the complexity and variability of the human body. It is also one of the most intriguing art forms as it conveys an intrinsic energy between the model and artist.

The work being exhibited reflects efforts that range from composed work of highly detailed renderings, loose and expressive studies, and formal artworks subsequently completed from the efforts of the life drawing session. Some of the work presented was created within minutes of the model taking pose while others are more refined works finished many hours beyond the initial rendering during the session. These works also demonstrate the vast usage of mediums, mark making and techniques that artists apply to express the human form and portrait. In some cases the same pose is presented from two artists perspectives.

I invite you all to enjoy these exchanges between artist and model.
