Alex’s Stupid Studio is an art project slash online gift store run by Alex and Emmalee McMullen, out of their apartment on the East End of Pittsburgh.

HOME IS WHERE THE ART IS is our first solo art show as a team, couple, and company.

Artist Statement:

HOME IS WHERE THE ART IS is an idea that comes from a lot of places. On a literal level, it references the studio we’ve built in our apartment. The vast majority of the progress and achievement that we have made as artists over the past five years has not been on canvas or paper; it’s been scraping together all the things needed to be creative on a daily basis like space, money, time, a website, equipment, supplies, knowledge, ideas, etc.

The title also references where our creative journey started. We met in art class in our small farm-town high school in central Pennsylvania. Since then, we have moved here, graduated college, gotten married, and started our own home and business together.

It also reminds us that in order to make a place into a home you have to be surrounded by physical things that provide usefulness, joy, and comfort. Making things that can be used and cherished for a long time is a core approach in everything we make.

Stylistically, we are heavily influenced mainly by two kinds of art. The first being pop art like that of Pittsburgh-born artists Keith Haring and Andy Warhol and the second being folk art, especially Pennsylvania Dutch art. Abstraction, simplicity, bright colors, decorative elements— literal, everyday things that surround you, designed to be easily understood and enjoyed.

A lot of the work we find interesting that has been released in our lifetimes has come from overseas, specifically Japan from artists of the Superflat art movement like Yoshitomo Nara or Ayako Rokkaku and from the character creation and commercial side as well, such as Sanrio and Pokemon.

Thank you for reading this, and thank you for coming.
